This Page presents the fundamental, essential process for Ending Islamic Jihad — namely, Nullifying it. That means Nullifying its ideological foundations. The ideological foundation of Islamic Jihad is Islam. And the core, the foundation of that foundation is the Koran. That, then, must be our target. So, we begin one of the most major processes in all of History.

In recent decades the Koran has been subjected to the equivalent of the Biblical scholarhip that the Judaic Old Testament and the Christian New Testament have undergone for over a hundred years. Both inside and outside of the worldwide Muslim community, or umma, modern scholarship is finding new information and perspectives regarding the Koran, depite the Koran’s internal self-defensive dictum at the very beginning that “This book is not to be doubted” — a dictum that has been enforced by Muslim fanatics with the traditional death threats and violence against scholars, journalists, and writers, whose research inevitably leads to doubting. Nevertheless, by applying rational standards of evidence to Koranic material, modern scholarhip is providing radically new perspectives on the rise and meanings of the Koran and Islam itself.

The New York Times of 2 March 2002 carries a long, substantial survey of those studies in the article “Scholars Are Quietly Offering New Theories of the Koran,” beginning on the front page. The scholars whose work is noted are: Christopher Luxemborg (a psuedonym for safety), author of The Syro-Aramaic Reading of the Koran;  Egyptian Naguib Mahfouz of the University of Nablus on the West Bank;  John Wainsbrough of the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University;  Patricia Clone, professor of history at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, USA;  Michael Cook, professor of Near Eastern History at Princeton University;  Fred M Donner of the University of Chicago, USA;  Roy Mottahedeh, professor of Islamic History at Harvard University, USA;  Gerd Puin of Saarland University, Germany;  Jane McAuliffe, professor of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, USA;  Ibn Warraq, former Muslim, now head of the Institute for the Secularization of Islamic Society;  Ebrahim Moosa, a Muslim cleric and professor of Religious Studies at Duke University, USA;  and Andrew Rippin, an Islamicist at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.  Some of their findings are presented below as a composite of excerpts from The New York Times article.

  • Parts of the Koran have “been misread and mistranslated for centuries.” They have been “derived from pre-existing Christian-Aramaic texts that were misinterpreted by later Islamic scholars who prepared the editions of the Koran commonly read today. “For example, the ‘virgins’ who supposedly will tend to “good Islamic martyrs as their reward in paradise are in reality ‘white raisins’ of crystal clarity rather than maidens.”
  • “…the text of the Koran appeared as a composite of different voices of texts compiled over dozens if not hundreds of years … scholars agree that there is no evidence of the Koran until 691 — 59 years after Muhammad’s death.”
  • “Islamic history did not arise as the classic tradition says it did.” The Koran and Islamic tradition are inherently paradoxical in that the Koranic text is thoroughly monotheistic yet Muhammad, an illiterate camel merchant, received his alleged revelations in remote, sparsely populated Mecca, among idol-worshipping Arab Bedoins.
  • The origins of Islam must be considered in “the wider context of the religions of the Middle East” rather than as a local, spontaneous product of the Arabian desert, and hence it should be recognized that “Islam emerged out of the widespread monotheistic soup of the Middle East.”
  • The earliest copies of the Koran were “written without vowels and diacritical dots that later Arabic uses to make clear what letter is intended.  In the eighth and ninth centuries, more than a century after the death of Muhammad, Islamic commentators added diacritical marks to clear up the ambiguities of the text, giving precise meanings to passages based on what they considered to be their proper context.”
  • “Since there are no Arab chronicles from the first century of Islam, [researchers] looked at several non-Muslim seventh century accounts that suggested Muhammad was perceived not as a founder of a new religion but as a preacher in the Old Testament tradition, hailing the coming of a Messiah. Many of the early documents refer to followers of Muhammad as … descendents of Hagar, the servant girl that the Jewish patriarch Abraham used to father his son Ismael … the followers of Muhammad may have seen themselves as retaking their place in the Holy Land alongside their Jewish cousins.”
  • “Many of the text’s difficulties can be clarified when it is seen as closely related to Aramaic, the language group of most Middle Eastern Jews and Christians at the time. For example, the famous passage about the virgins is based on the word ‘hur,’ which is an adjective in the feminine plural meaning simply ‘white.’ Islamic tradition insists the term ‘hur’ stands for ‘houri,’ which means virgin … but this is a forced misreading of the text. In both ancient Aramaic and in at least one respected dictionary of early Arabic, ‘hur’ means ‘white raisin.’ The passages dealing with paradise have been traced to a Christian text called Hymns of Paradise by a fourth-century author … the word paradise was derived from the Aramaic word for garden and all the descriptions of paradise describe it as a garden of flowing waters, abundant fruits and white raisins, a prized delicacy in the ancient Near East … and mentioned often as hur.”
  • “… in the early archaic copies of the Koran it is impossible to distinguish between the words ‘to fight’ and ‘to kill.’ In many cases … Islamic exegetes added diacritical marks that yielded the harsher meaning.”
  • “… the broader implications of some of the revisionist scholarship is to say that the Koran is not an authentic book, that it was fabricated 150 years later.”
  • “Approaches to the Koran that are now being branded as heretical — interpreting the text metaphorically rather than literally — were widely practiced in mainstream Islam a thousand years ago.”
  • “… it is eye-opening to students the amount of independent thought and diversification that existed in the early centuries of Islam. It was only in more recent centuries that there was a need for limiting interpretations.”

CONCLUSION Modern Koranic Scholarship demonstrates conclusively that the Koran is of wholly secular origin, an entirely manmade fabrication, with no evidence of divinity. It further demonstrates the highly uncertain phrasings and meanings of the text, because so many people were involved in fabricating the Koran over such long spans of time, and because of the many subjective decisions made by Muslim scholars, interpreters and editors over the centuries as to what clarifications to give the ambiguities and other uncertainties of the text, editings that were passed on to succeeding generations who made further decisions not knowing the many that had been made before.

The origins of Jihadic Islam are embedded in the origins of Islam, so we must continue there, now with the overwhelming power of Classical Koranic Scholarship. There is a huge difference between the mythological origins of Islam and the historical origins. Our task here is to clarify the historical origins, and to do so briefly yet sufficiently. The roots of Islam go back to the Bronze Age through Judaeo-Christianity, out of which Muhammad and his Jewish and Christian colleagues created it. So we begin with the creation of Islam by Muhammad in the 7th Century CE.

The validity of Jihadic Islam’s Core IVL (Core Ideology of Violence and License — a central concept of the new field of Ideologics (eye’ dee oh low’ jics)) can inhere only in Muhammad’s self-proclamation of his doctrine’s divine origins: Being the words of Allah dictated to him by the Jewish angel Gabriel, which he remembered perfectly and later dictated verbatim to scribes, inasmuch as he was illiterate, and they wrote it all down verbatim perfectly. In that, Islam makes an enormously bigger claim than does Judaeo-Christianity, thereby declaring that every word in the Koran is of divine origin. The validity of that claim is maintained by sophistically converting every indication to the contrary into proof of the claim! However, educated Mankind is not so easily frightened or its intellect so easily dictated to. Consequently, a very large body of exhaustive, detailed, solid and authentic scholarship has arisen to examine Islam’s claim to testamental divinity, and that claim has been found severely wanting.

Definitive biographies of the historical Muhammad and his Koran show clearly his deep and extensive derivation of the Koran from Judaeo-Christianity, especially from Judaism. That history will now be presented at some length, in conjunction with a link to another resource, although altogether but a mere speck relative to the enormous body of available evidence in the underlying resource to be discussed next.

For the presentation here together with the link readers will be provided with extensive quotations from the exhaustive scholarship of most excellent, distinguished and classic resources comprising the underlying resource: the 1858 and 1878 editions of The Life of Mahomet by Sir William Muir, Esq., K.C.S.I., LL.D., D.C.L., Ph.D. The full title of the 1858 edition is The Life of Mahomet and History of Islam, To the Hegira / With Introductory Chapters on the Original Sources for the Biography of Mahomet and on the Pre-Islamic History of Arabia (London: Smith, Elder & Co.), 4 volumes. The full title of the 1878 edition is The Life of Mahomet / From Original Sources: New Edition (Abridged from the First Edition in Four Volumes) (London: Smith, Elder & Co.). Their exhaustive detailed excellence cannot be appreciated without personally seeing the extraordinary, massive detail in the volumes themselves, much being in the original Arabic, which this writer most fortunately found in a deserted corner of Firestone Library of Princeton University, where he enjoyed Guest Scholar privileges while working on the primary resource of this enterprise, PRINCIPIA IDEOLOGICA / A Treatise On Combatting Human Malignance, from 1993 through 1999. The passages quoted from Muir are numbered for readers’ convenience. In the bracketed page citations, the 1858 edition is given the number 75, and the 1878 the number 76, to conform with usage in the PRINCIPIAThose long and detailed pages are presented separately on Page 7C, Creating Islam. Here we skip directly to a Conclusion from the  massive detail  comprising the four volumes cited, so much of which is in Arabic and works in detail directly from Arabic sources from before, during and after Muhammad’s lifetime.  Certainly that more than suffices for the quite focused objective that this presentation is to serve: to end the 1400-year-old Islamic Jihad by Nullifying its ideological foundation, Jihadic Islam, and thereby break the Flaming Sword of Islam for good. For, we are now well able to come to the following empirical Conclusions.

CONCLUSION  Classical Koranic Scholarship has proven by researching, finding and compiling exhaustive detail from Muhammad’s life:  that he struggled hard to learn from and work with his Jewish companions to learn Jewish beliefs, concepts, traditions and Scriptures, which at first he venerated; that from those efforts, combined with some smatterings of very deficient knowledge of Christianity, he and his companions and many others following his death created the Koran, with no evidence whatsoever of his having received divine messages from the angel Gabriel but with much evidence that he was confused as to who the Jewish scriptures asserted Gabriel was and what he said; that his style varied over time; that subterfuges, inconsistencies, and deficiencies multiplied as he progressed; that his propagation of the resultant ‘faith’ relied on total bigotry towards all dissent, honest questioning and other faiths, and on violence and plundering; and that, in sum, the history as contrasted with the mythology of the rise of Islam is totally earthly and wholly manmade, and devoid of any discernible glimmer of divinity beyond Muhammad’s own self-proclamation thereof.

COMBINED CONCLUSION  The combined powers of Modern and Classical Koranic Scholarship prove overwhelmingly that the Koran was a wholly manmade fabrication devoid of any discernible divinity — certainly not remotely of the sort claimed for the Koran and Islam by Muhammad and Islam itself. Modern Koranic scholarship further demonstrates the highly uncertain phrasings and meanings of the text because so many people were involved in fabricating the Koran over such a long span of time, often using very different language systems. The uses to which this knowledge can be put in combatting terrorism, ending Islamic Jihad, and breaking the Flaming Sword, are outlined under the OPERATIONS tab of  this writer’s book TERROR WAR AND PEACE   ( http://terror1.com )  .

The foregoing Nullification measures can be reinforced by bringing to bear the contemporary Islamic Apostasy Movement (this writer’s term). For instance:

We are a group of Muslim apostates who have left Islam out of our own conviction when we discovered that the religion of Islam is not a religion at all. The core of Islam, that is, the Qur’an, Hadis and Sharia, are filled with unbound hatred for unbelievers, unbelievably intolerant and exceptionally cruel and merciless to those who dare to deviate an iota from its doctrine. We discovered that Islam is beyond alteration, because Muslims who attempt to modernize and reform its unremitting bigotry, mindless rituals, and its barbaric and draconian punitive measures are targeted for annihilation…

We want to tell the world that the current Islamic terrorism is not an aberration of the so-called ‘peaceful’ Islam, but rather it is the real Islam preached and practiced by the alleged Prophet Mohammad…– the Islam that is determined to replace the current civilization with the 7th century Arab Bedouin barbarism.

Another, stunning example is provided by the article Science and the Islamic world by Pervez Admirali Hoodboy, chair and professor in the department of physics at Quiad-i-Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan, where he has taught for 35 years. It appeared in the August 2007 issue of Physics Today, the magazine of the American Institute of Physics, the umbrella organization over many physical science societies including the American Physical Society, of which this writer is a member. It may be read and printed out (free) via the website at http://physicstoday.org  . It covers an enormous swath of Islamic and Western history, culture and thought. A pungent detail is his noting that at his university there are four mosques but no bookstore. Here we quote only the conclusion of his concluding paragraph:

…the practice of religion must be a matter of choice for the individual, not enforced by the state. This leaves secular humanism, based on common sense and the principles of logic and reason, as our only reasonable choice for governance and progress. Being scientists, we understand this easily. The task is to persuade those who do not.

The essence of this webpage is Jihadic Nullification. That is, this treatment has proven comprehensively and in great detail that the Core Ideology of Violence and License of Islam is Null and Void because the underlying ideology, Islam, is a wholly secular, manmade fabrication devoid of any divinity, and has thereby Nullified the supposed Islamic foundations of ‘Islamic Jihad.’ Therefore, there is absolutely no legitimacy to any murder, slaughter or destruction being perpetrated in the name of ‘Islamic Jihad.’ Of particular note: Suicide bombers, or, more accurately, murder bombers, in the name of Islam do not go to Paradise because that concept is Null and Void along with the rest of the parent mythology. That is, suicide bombers go nowhere other than to pieces. In the larger picture, the Nullification of Jihadic Islam  Nullifies all Islamist violence, aggression and oppression, whether or not committed in the name of ‘Jihad.’ We should note that the word ‘Jihadic’ in ‘Jihadic Islam,’ while useful in clarifying the focus, is redundant because Islam is inherently and explicitly Jihadic, as commanded by Muhammad in many ways and places in the Koran.

The resultant de-divinized, or de-sanctified, Muhammad may retain his title of ‘Prophet,’ but now with the secular meaning of the word: “a person regarded as, or claiming to be, an inspired teacher or leader … a spokesperson of some doctrine, cause or movement” (Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary),  which is in keeping with the origins of the word ‘prophet’: from the Latin propheta and Greek prophetes for ‘speaker.’

The resultant de-divinized, or de-sanctified, Islam is still a religion, because for something to be considered a religion does not require divine origin, but rather that it only meet the secular definitions found in ordinary dictionaries. There is already a significant and growing movement among Muslims who promote and believe in various forms of secular Islam, as well as its abandonment.

With its ‘divine’ fangs of Violence and License to commit Violence pulled, Islam remains a culture, or civilization, still Abrahamic, in that its philosophy traces back to the patriarch Abraham (now considered by cultural anthropologists to have been merely a ‘mythic culture hero’).  Most importantly, without the crushing submission to self-righteous theocratic tyranny and sanctimonious savagery, which have been Nullified, Invalidated, Islam is now redefined as submission to Truth rather than to a manmade mythological Islam, and becomes open to dissent, discussion, and absorption of new and advanced knowledge and philosophy from and since the Enlightenment, and to progress, and a peaceable, just, healthful, prosperous, and perhaps even glorious future for its reformed renaissance, and hence for the world.

The immediate priority, however, is to prevent Islamic Jihad from becoming Nuclear, as warned in the OVERVIEW of the Home Page.  The only way to do that is by Ending Islamic Jihad — by Nullifying it — as we have just done — and promoting these processes and results worldwide.
