It was the worst of times.  The world was going up in flames of hate, driven by the whirlwinds of bigotry, racism, and other malignant ideologies.  It was the Era of the Third Reich, of Nazism, in the heart of Christendom, of Stalin’s Terror savaging the Soviet Union, of Fascism in Italy driving its aggressions in Africa, of Fascism in Spain driving brutal civil war, of Shinto-Tanakaism driving Japan as it slashed, slaughtered and raped it way through Asia, of bigotry, racism, cross-burnings and lynchings in the United States, and of imminent World War.  As a child I sensed that the ethos of the time would roil on evermore, and began conceiving this work to combat it.

— The first paragraph of the Preface to this writer’s book Ending The Bronze Age (2001)

The name of the new field set forth in this webbook is Ideologics. When Applied Ideologics is focused on War & Peace, or national and international security, it is referred to as Ideopower.  That is less confusing than the current term Softpower, which will henceforth be dropped, although retained in existing works rather than rewriting.  In keeping with the foregoing the title of the foundational work of this Enterprise is PRINCIPIA IDEOLOGICA (1999).

The mathematical foundations of Ideologics, viz., Ideotopology, first appeared in Management Handbook For Public Administrators (1978), which is reprinted in the Addendum to that PRINCIPIA with permission of Van Nostrand Reinhold Company.

The neurophysiological foundations were provided in the essay “Ragnar Granit and the Sense of Ideas,” in The American-Scandinavian Review, Vol. XLIV, No. 4, December 1956, whose Patrons were the Kings of Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and whose Board of Trustees included Harold C. Urey and Thomas J. Watson.  I had met Dr. Granit, then Director of the Nobel Institute for Neurophysiology in Stockholm, and discussed his work with him at a reception for Hugo Theorell, who had won the 1955 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on oxidation enzymes, on which I had done an article that appeared in Nordsjternan.

For complete independence of thought and expression this Enterprise has been created, written and published almost entirely outside of “the system.”  Some Comments may be found on Page 4.                                            _______________________________________________________

In the beginning was the Word

John 1.1, Judaeo-Christian New Testament.  In the original Greek “Word” was “Logos,” meaning Idea and the manifestation of Idea.   The phrase thus projected into the Cosmos the ancient perception of the primacy of Idea in human affairs.

In the language of Sigmund Freud’s classic masterpiece Civilization and Its Discontents (1930) we remain entrapped in the ongoing dualism and conflict of Thanatos, the instinct of aggression, hate, self-destruction, and death, versus Eros, the instinct of peace, love, construction, communality, and life.  In those terms, this Pacificus Enterprise provides the dynamic new dimension essential for the nullification of Thanatos and victory of Eros.   All well grounded in Logos.  While this description is philosophical and psychopoetic, the reality is power.

For, the result is a powerful weapon, the blue-print, the keystone of  a wholly new softpower concept and its extraordinarily low-cost, high-impact, low-casualty defense system. As such it is wholly distinct from the limited, weak two-word concept ‘soft power.’  A new field has emerged that is applicable to the full range of human malignance, from families to nations to transnational movements.

The core thesis, the essential reading, comprises, in addition to this Home Page (OVERVIEW and PROLOGUE):

  • Page 1.  WAR, PEACE AND ARMS CONTROL IN THE BRONZE AGE.  Beginning from formation of the planet, the essay builds the origins, evolution, nature and dimensions of the War/Peace problem, illuminates the fatal flaw in all prior attempts at resolution, and derives the key, the central, the essential measure required to prevent War, and if that fails, to win it — while hewing to Sun Tzu’s classic principle: To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill. Includes introduction to the two new powerful weapons for nullifying malignant ideologies, especially those comprising threats to the peace, which is newly properly defined.

  • Page 8.  REFORMING THE BRONZE AGE.  Reforms Abrahamic Civilization’s foundational savagery.  The title is taken from the remark by British historian Michael Wood in his television series Legacy:  “We Westerners of the late 20th century — for all our modernity — are still a Bronze Age people.”

  • Page  9.  EPILOGUE.  Includes the Original Sin correspondence between this writer and the late great theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, and applies it, with him, to the problem of War/Peace.  That process and its conclusion augment what has come before.

That thesis, this Enterprise, began during World War II and developed greatly during World War III.  Treatment of Islamic Jihad was never integral with the original or central thesis, and it is not so now.  The foundations of the thesis, the system, its principles and applications, are provided in the magnum opus PRINCIPIA IDEOLOGICA: A Treatise on Combatting Human Malignance.

However, inasmuch as that problem has morphed into Global Nuclear Islamic Jihad, applications of this new softpower defense system to that problem must be developed and provided.  Even with nuclear-bomb events only looming but not yet actuated, non-state-state “forms of conflict and violence have soared. The number of people killed or injured by terrorists has gone from about 7,000 in 1995 to more than 25,000 in 2006. Very often, these terrorist attacks are either directly carried out by foreigners or planned, funded, and coordinated by networks that operate internationally.” [1] Through them all runs a commonality: ideology: mainstream or local variant Islamic Jihadism. And so, softpower defenses  of this Enterprise have  been developed and provided to defend against that commonality  — with forcefulness commensurate with the threat — herein contained in Pages 7A, B, C, D, and E.  They are separable from the original, main, ideopower thesis, and may be bypassed if too much for some readers’ tastes or background. In any event, neither the presence nor  absence of the Jihadic treatment effects the legitimacy, value or appreciation of the main thesis.  See Page 4, Comments.

The Terrorism Short Course for persons focused solely on combatting contemporary Global Nuclear Islamic Jihad, or World War IV,  especially on the United States Homeland,  comprises:

Of special interest is the  ADDENDDUM: ARMISTICE DAY 2 0 0 5, which depicts the origins of this work in the sturm und drang of  the West’s and this writer’s histories and the role of the U.S. Army in preserving his life during World War II so that he could continue its development.

Pacificus Enterprise will prove to  be  an exceedingly powerful Epilogue to the evils of the past and present, the foundational Prologue to a far better future, the architecture of new Defenses of Peace, and altogether a truly Millennial work.

Where there is no vision, the people perish.
